The suburb that overdelivers on its address

Wavell Heights is the kind of place that gets undersold on paper and wins people over the moment they arrive. Ten kilometres north of the city, it sits on elevated, hilly ground that most northside suburbs simply do not have. The high pockets catch city views and summer breezes. The streets are leafy and quiet. Nine in ten homes are freestanding houses, and more than seven in ten are owner-occupied. This is a suburb people settle into.

The housing tells the story. Renamed from West Nundah in 1941 after Field Marshal Lord Wavell, the suburb filled out in the post-war building boom. Weatherboard and brick homes on generous 600 square metre blocks still line the streets. Many have been extended or fully renovated. Some have been rebuilt from scratch by families who were priced out of suburbs closer to town. Only a small share is character-zoned, which gives owners real freedom to improve and add value.

Green space is everywhere. Nineteen parks cover more than a sixth of the suburb, anchored by Shaw Park on Kedron Brook to the south, home to Ian Healy Oval, the tennis centre, walking tracks, bike paths and dog parks. Families are drawn by the schools, with Wavell Heights State School and Wavell State High School both within the suburb, plus a strong choice of private and nearby options. Westfield Chermside and Stafford City are minutes away, the airport is close, and the city is a short run down the motorway.
