Small, storied, and rarely for sale

Shorncliffe is one of Brisbane’s smallest and most tightly held suburbs. Fewer than two thousand people live here, on a single peninsula wrapped by Bramble Bay on three sides and Cabbage Tree Creek on the fourth. There is only one way in, through Sandgate. That geography is the whole appeal. Nothing passes through Shorncliffe. You only come here if you mean to.

The pier defines the place. At 351 metres it is the longest timber pier in Brisbane and one of the longest recreational piers in Australia. Rebuilt in 2016 to match the 1880s original, with white timber railings and colonial lamps, it draws walkers, anglers and photographers at every tide. Around it sit Moora Park, the dog off-leash beach, and Lovers Walk, the coastal path that curves round to Sandgate.

This is sailing country. The Sandgate Yacht Club has raced on the bay since 1912, and the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club on Cabbage Tree Creek is the start line for the Brisbane to Gladstone race each Easter. Onshore, the streets are character-zoned and leafy, with grand old Queenslanders on generous blocks near St Patrick’s College and Shorncliffe State School. Homes here are held for decades. When one comes up, buyers pay attention.
