The village that never lost its character
Sandgate has been a seaside escape since the 1850s, when colonial Brisbane came north to the bay for the summer. More than 150 years on, that history is still written into the streets. Heritage Queenslanders line the rises above the water. The old town hall clock still chimes. The post office is now a bar and grill that took the postcode for its name.
Life here moves around the waterfront. The foreshore runs along Bramble Bay with walking paths, off-leash dog beaches and shaded picnic grounds, connecting Sandgate to Brighton one way and Shorncliffe the other. Locals fish off the pier, paddle board at dawn, and buy prawns straight off the trawlers along Sinbad Street. When the wind comes up, the bay fills with kite surfers.
The village centre is the heart of it. Independent cafes, small bars with live music, a weekend farmers market and boutiques fill the high street, with a new Woolworths built to sit alongside the character architecture rather than against it. Sandgate State School has taught local children since 1873, and Sandgate District State High School serves the wider area. People come here for the lifestyle and they stay. As one long-time local put it, this is the suburb they chose as their forever home.
